Isaiah Joiner and Aries Lewis recognized for being selected as California State Classified Employees of the Year

On May 1, 2024, the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, announced nine 2024 California Classified School Employees of the Year.   A total of 134 nominations were made, and of the nine selected, two are from the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District.  Please join us in celebrating these two outstanding employees as a community. 

Clerical and Administrative Services: Aries Lewis, Community Liaison, Green Valley and Oak View High Schools.

Aries Lewis has been pivotal in fostering positive connections between her schools and the community for the last five years, particularly in supporting at-risk students. Her dedication extends to guiding students through transitional services and collaborating with military recruiters. A testament to her commitment is her unwavering support for families after meetings, and she earns their trust in the process. Lewis actively participates in community events like Trunk or Treat and Community Night Out, organized by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, to emphasize the importance of school presence in the wider community.

Green Valley High School Principal Frank Tucci praised Ms. Lewis, saying, “Her narrative echoes within California families, epitomizing progress through personal drive within the supportive framework of our public education system. She connects deeply with our students and their families as a beacon of trust, guidance, and inspiration. We express gratitude for her invaluable contributions to our esteemed team.”

Security Services: Isaiah Joiner, School Security, Mesa View Middle School

Isaiah Joiner has stood out for the last ten years as one of Mesa View Middle School’s best campus security staff members. He demonstrates an exemplary understanding of what it means to make middle school students feel safe and welcome during this time of uncertainty. With over a decade of dedicated service to the district, Joiner consistently goes above and beyond as campus security. Whether coordinating athletic events, supporting schoolwide restorative practices, or participating in various school activities, he consistently seeks ways to enhance the overall educational experience for students.

Mesa View Middle School Principal Cathy Pearson proudly said, “Isaiah Joiner is admired, well-known, and respected by everyone! Every school campus needs a person like Isaiah; he is the heart of the school. His proactive approach to problem-solving and commitment to maintaining a secure environment makes students feel safe and welcomed. Isaiah's dedication positively impacts the school's culture and enriches the learning environment. He is a mentor, a role model, a coach, and an inspiration to our students.”

In a press release from the California Department of Education, State Superintendent Thurmond shared, “My heartfelt congratulations go to these outstanding employees for going the extra mile to step up and support California students so they can continue to learn.  These dedicated employees make sure kids have healthy meals, safe campuses and transportation, and systems and supports during difficult and unexpected changes and ensure that all students are supported in their lives and in their education.”

YCJUSD Board of Education President Mike Snellings celebrated the two honorees by stating, “Having two classified employees from YCJUSD being recognized at the State level is a testament to our district’s commitment to employee and student excellence. Isaiah Joiner and Aries Lewis are prime examples of people making a difference in children’s lives. We celebrate and applaud them for this well-deserved recognition.”

The State Superintendent will honor Ms. Lewis and Mr. Joiner at a luncheon in Sacramento on May 23, 2024.
